Just received my Sony XBR9. Totally happy. I read all the reviews and I guess the backlight issue is there but not nearly as bad as some say. You can adjust the backlight to your liking. Additionally, if you view the HD or BR in the dark the back lighting is more noticable. But I only noticed it really on the horizontal bands above and below the actual picture. Anyway, I think the negatives of the back lighting are over exaggerated. Bottom line is the picture is best by far and the local digital stations HD are beautiful. Makes sports even more fun to watch.
Amazon, was EXCELLENT as usual with their customer service and shipping, the unit showed up as scheduled too.

Sony KDL-52XBR9 Couldn't be happier
This is my first HDTV and i'm so glad i didn't settle for another brand with a comparable configuration but lower price. At first I was worried that it may be a little too big for my living room space (only about 8 feet between the TV and the couch), but turns out that it's still a great viewing experience! I am yet to watch something on blueray, but all the 1080i and 780p transmissions are enough eye candy! I was also considering a 52" Smasung, but to me it looked a bit too contrasty/glossy because of the accented blacks and saturated colors. Sony's picture seemed more "true to life" and less eye-popping. However, that could be personal preference.
One of the neatest things about this set is the well organized, user friendly menu. So even though there are a thousand options that you can play around with, you don't really get lost in a maze. It feels like a 52" iPhone that plays Youtube videos and shows you the weather :).
My favorite experience so far has been watching movies streamed from netflix (i have it hooked to an xbox 360, but you can choose to connect it directly to your comp). Since their latest streaming upgrade, the speed and picture quality has gotten 10 times better. Earlier, it used to get too pixelated to watch on an HDTV.
If you are a lot into console gaming, you will likely be bowled over by the picture and sound quality.
Excellent for movie/gaming/sports parties!
Overall - best deal for the price!

Sony KDL-52XBR9 Best TV I have ever owned
I purchased this TV through Amazon about 3 weeks ago. I ordered it on Thursday, it was delievered the next Tuesday. It arrived in perfect condition.
All the positive reviews I have read here, were correct, and spot on. Most of the negative reviews were (I felt) stretching it a bit, or I just plain don't
notice.
The TV has a gorgeous picture, and I am 110% satisfied that I purchased this one.. I have always been a supporter of Sony products, and I guess I always will.
Good luck on your decision, and if you do choose this one, I don't feel you will go wrong.

Sony KDL-52XBR9 Incrediable TV
Had the TV for about a week. Was quick and great delivery with a very good price from amazon.com (direct). Price was lower than the 52XBR6 or 52XBR7
The picture is amazing. I have not seen any of the black ghosting. 240mhz appears to work well on sports. NBA Finals and Stanley cup were/are incredible.
Internet features are nice too.
Only con is speakers are on back of TV. Not bad sound, but I will be hooking to a home theater system, which completes the HD experience.
This TV is highly recommended!

Sony KDL-52XBR9 52" Beauty
I replaced my 42" XBR Plasma Wega with this new model and believe me when I say that I LOVED my Plasma but it cannot hold a candle to the new XBR 9. The picture quality from any source just looks great. From cable shows to movies played on my PS3 the images just pop out of the screen. I did have my doubts about how well the XBR 9 would handle the fast action of sports or fast moving images but its just truly amazing how crisp the action looks with none of the 'smear' that I expected from a LCD TV. I read a previous review about how the Black was not Black enough, which I don't understand, with all the options on preset and custom settings I'm sure you can manipulate the picture to your hearts content. And I see none of the 'splotches' of lights in dark scenes or any other strange visual anomaly on my screen. Also this set has many input options, you'll be hard pressed to use all the inputs on the TV, 4 of them are HDMI. If you're looking to upgrade or get your first HD TV look no further - this is it. Well worth the price.
Just a quick note on the delivery -- I ordered the TV on a Sunday night and by early Wednesday morning I was watching it.
Edit--- After having the XBR9 for a couple of weeks I have noticed that there are some 'splotches' of light on the corners after a couple of hours of viewing, its very soft but it is there. It's only noticeable when the screen goes dark. It can be distracting to some but Im satisfied with the overall performance of the TV.

Sony KDL-52XBR9 I love it!,
Internet TV works great! No more messing up with extra boxes, connecting PC to TV or any such stuff. This box just works! You can copy HD movie (.mp4 in h264 format) to a thumb drive (or usb hard drive), plug it straight into the TV (side usb2 port) and it plays it! No other TV can beat that. And with direct access to the internet, you can watch so much stuff. Selection of for-pay movies in Amazon is very good, much more than on Comcast on-demand. Picture is awesome as well!
